Quality, design and sustainability

We are wetheknot, a small fashion brand based in Lisbon, Portugal. We consider ourselves a work in progress because we believe that there’s always room to evolve and contribute to a fairer industry.

Philosophy

ACTING LOCALLY, THINKING GLOBALLY

We aim to inspire people to live with a few timeless objects made to last. This is why quality over quantity is a cornerstone of our ethos, and we have no interest in trends or seasonal collections. By sourcing local materials, producing as little waste as possible, and making our customers think about the impact of their choices, we aim to find sustainable solutions at every step of production.

Storytime

WHERE WE STARTED

wetheknot was founded by Sérgio and Filipe, a fashion designer and graphic designer. They met in Porto back in 2011 and started working together with the mutual goal of creating contemporary objects that they could envision using and wearing in the long term. Thus, they started wetheknot by repurposing materials they already had and transforming them into actual pieces — such as using broken umbrellas and turning them into swim shorts — always viewing sustainability as a regular practice.

How far we came

Nowadays our product ranges from clothing to accessories made from sustainable and premium quality materials that are mainly produced in Portugal. Our aim isn’t perfection, but to evolve with the times and to keep on bettering our practices at every step of the way. We believe this can be done by following a holistic approach, focusing equally on social, environmental, and economic issues, how these connect and interact.

Where we head

What matters is the intention. Being sustainable is about making informed decisions, bearing in mind how they will impact people and the planet, and that’s what we aim to do. This is our conscious alternative inside the fashion industry’s current discourse and our way to face the multiple challenges of the 21st century.

People

There’s so much we can do by ourselves but if there’s something we’ve learned throughout wetheknot’s journey is that none of this would be possible without the help of our partners.
Sustainability isn’t just an environmental matter. It comes across all areas of our work, namely on a social level. It means respecting everyone involved in what we do, which is why transparency and accountability are key to ensure we’re keeping up to speed with the goals we’ve set for ourselves.

OUR PARTNERS

We are fortunate to work with partners that contribute to bringing our design ideas to life and in helping us grow within our practice.

Thanks to their expertise and craftsmanship in clothing and accessories making, the partnership with our suppliers turns out to be a collaborative process. We believe that for two parties to have a good and successful partnership it has to be founded on principles like trust and closeness.

All wetheknot’s clothes and accessories are made by our local partners, set either in Almada or in the North of Portugal. We have the luck to be collaborating and talking with them on a regular basis for years now. This practice ensures the high standards we’ve set in the first place regarding social and environmental responsibility.

Dona Manuela

Seamstress, avid dancer, a northern woman that no one can hold back.

D. Manuela was our very first partner. Based in Vila Nova de Famalicão, North of Portugal, she has worked as a seamstress her whole life, often in medium-sized factories around her region. In these last few years, she decided to work for herself and from the comfort of her home. She’s very loving, energetic, young-spirited, and loves a good laugh. She has been making every Pouch in Vegan leather and participated in the production of our first collections.

SOHIL VAHORA

Seamster, tailor, music lover, and spicy food eater

Sohil started partnering with us in 2016, who had recently arrived in his new hometown — Lisbon — from his hometown in India, Gujarat, where he learned how to master sewing. Very rooted in his culture, he has brought with him his beautiful family, love for spicy food (even though he always thinks it isn’t), and Indian music. He’s a very joyful and hard-working person, and we feel very fortunate for him to be a part of our team. Given his skilful knowledge, he brings to life most of our accessories as well as our Trousers, Shorts, and prototypes.

Our Team

We have a small yet dedicated team responsible for designing our clothing & accessories, as well as our communication, packaging, and graphic work. Following the founder's Filipe & Sérgio vision, our workflow incorporates collaborative practices, openness to new ideas and experimentation, and great concern for sustainability. All of this in order to bring the very best apparel and to step by step change the reality of fashion to a more diverse, dynamic and less impactful system.

FILIPE CARDIGOS

Graphic designer, wetheknot co-founder, photographer, and kombucha maker

With a background in Communication Design, Filipe’s responsible for wetheknot’s overall aesthetic and visual content. He’s the head of the communication department, coordinating and planning every sort of content produced by wetheknot. Furthermore, he’s the photographer of all photoshoots done by wetheknot, preparing the background, props, light, and after edits. A funny and charismatic person whose eye for graphic design has helped elevate the brand’s position overall.

SÉRGIO GAMEIRO

Fashion designer, wetheknot co-founder, and dog whisperer

Sérgio has a degree in Fashion design, being responsible for the brand’s vision and designing its range of clothing & accessories. Every production, pattern making, and piece results from Sérgio's research and creative work, as well as every curated outfit for the brand’s photoshoots. He also plans every outfit for the brand’s photoshoots. He’s a very caring person, with a contagious laugh, who always keeps in touch with all production partners and helps them in any way he can. And whose minimalist and modern aesthetic are the essence of wetheknot.

BEATRIZ QUERIDO

Fashion and product designer, and overall fashion icon

Beatriz started at wetheknot as a fashion design intern in December 2021 while balancing her Master’s degree in Communication Design. She also has a degree in Fashion Design, helping in the creation and design processes of upcoming pieces — contributing to their research, keeping contact with production partners, creating prototypes, and clothing and accessories patterns. She’s a very charismatic person who always has a good story up her sleeve and an incredible fashion sense.

MAYUMI AMARAL

Communication designer and silly dog lover

Mayumi started as a communication designer intern in August 2023 while pursuing her Master’s degree in the same field. Besides the graphic and communication tasks, due to her background in Architecture, she also contributes to experimenting and prototyping displays for our products and designing the window for our flagship store. Additionally, she enjoys drawing and illustration, trying to incorporate these influences into her work. Mayumi is also enthusiastic about petting dogs and having silly conversations with Beatriz.

PART OF OUR STORY— OUR PAST TEAM MEMBERS

As a small brand, we value every team member who has contributed to our work and development since the beginning. Therefore, we would like to express our gratitude for the work and partnership of wetheknot former members: Matilde Páscoa, who served as our copywriter, Davide Onestini, who worked as graphic designer, and Bruna Porto, former fashion designer at the brand.
